Sailability is a worldwide, not-for profit, volunteer-based movement that facilitates sailing for everyone regardless of ability. DOSC Sailability is committed to giving people of determination the opportunity to learn to sail.
We offer a structured sailing program to our students with the assistance of a Senior Sailing Instructor (SI) and a core group of Assistant Instructors (AI’s). Sailability activities are designed to introduce and encourage people of determination the opportunity to participate in sailing activities in a safe and supportive environment, with Bronze, Silver and Gold Certificates of Achievement to mark progress.
We have land-based learning to enable us to teach the theory of sailing to prepare students for on the water activities. We encourage the use of kayaks and Stand Up Paddleboards (SUP) to promote healthy activity and improve coordination and team work for our students.
RYA Sailability (Royal Yachting Association – UK) is a leading authority on sailing for people of determination. In the Spring of 2009, DOSC achieved RYA Sailability recognition through the hard work and dedication of the sailing team and volunteers. DOSC Sailability is one of a few very select overseas centres to hold this status and to achieve affiliation.
In 2010 DOSC Sailability were accredited as a training facility for volunteers. It is mandatory for anyone wishing to volunteer to undergo the Disability Awareness Training (DAT) we are the only centre in the Middle East to have this affiliation with 2 qualified and registered trainers on site.
In 2014 DOSC Sailability were accredited as a Centre of Excellence. This is a milestone chapter of the program as we are the first and remain the only centre outside of the UK to achieve this accreditation. This is the culmination of many hours of hard work by the Sailability committee supported by DOSC.
The Sailability program is primarily supported by DOSC and is run entirely by volunteers. Sailability relies heavily on donations and support from individuals, small businesses and corporations across the UAE for the purchase of equipment, boats, training materials and school educational visits.
Sailing is a sport that allows people of determination the ability to achieve independence and a real sense of self-worth, by being freed from the constraints of mobility and other issues that they face on land. Through sailing, students gain confidence and self-esteem.
